When I was young, my parents had the coolest Easter Egg hunt for my sister and me. When we woke up Easter morning, there would be a basket with the larger candy pieces, but nothing smaller, nor any eggs. A single note from the Easter Bunny in the form of a two-line riddle would tell us the description of the 1st plastic egg’s location. Using our detective skills, the two of us would then go on our respective hunts. Each next plastic egg would wield a small cache of candy – chocolate eggs, peanut butter cups, and the obligatory jelly beans.
But, it would also wield the next two line clues to the next egg.
There was a funny, unspoken contract between my sibling and me: if we stumbled across one of their eggs, we would not reveal its location to hone our comprehension skills. And at least for me, bragging rights that I was the better hunter… pay no mind, I was 3 years her senior. Once we had completed the trail of sweets and mysteries, there would be a small gift along with a few extra pieces of candy. It might have been a toy figure, or a robot for me, and a doll or plush for her.
We would return to our baskets with an arm full of confections and pride, once again having completed the Easter Bunny’s maze of clues. There was just something amazing about snacking on chocolate at 6am while flipping through how to turn the new robot into its race car form. Followed by the usual Easter brunch to trade stories with my cousins.
I turn 50 this year, and these egg hunts are still one of my most cherished memories. It’s a great tradition to keep going.
